After Clark and Lois escape Zod's ship, Clark defeats Faora, convincing the military that he is an ally. Clark enters the alien ship, and it allows him to communicate with the preserved consciousness of Jor-El in the form of a hologram.
He eventually infiltrates a scientific discovery of a Kryptonian scout spaceship in the Arctic. After Jonathan's death, an adult Clark spends several years living a nomadic lifestyle, working different jobs under false names. Jonathan reveals to a teenage Clark that he is an alien and advises him not to use his powers publicly, fearing that society will reject him.
Clark's Kryptonian physiology affords him superhuman abilities on Earth, which initially cause him confusion and ostracizing, but he gradually learns to harness his powers to help others. The infant Kal-El is raised as the adopted son of Jonathan and Martha Kent, who name him Clark. However, Krypton explodes some time afterwards, freeing them. After Zod murders Jor-El, he and his followers are captured and banished to the Phantom Zone. Scientist Jor-El and his wife Lara launch their newborn son Kal-El on a spacecraft to Earth, infusing his cells with a genetic codex to preserve the Kryptonian race. The ruling council is deposed by the rebel military leader, General Zod, and his followers. Hopefully we've redefined Superman.The planet Krypton faces imminent destruction due to its unstable core, resulting from years of exploiting Krypton's natural resources. Hopefully what we've done with the end of the film is we've gotten people - the mainstream audience, not the geek audience - to question. I think it makes some people feel uncomfortable other people say, "Right on." That was the point. I wrote the scene and I gave it to Chris and he said, "OK, you convinced me. Zack and I said, "We think we can figure out a way that you'll buy it." I came up with this idea of the heat vision and these people about to die. No way." We said, "But what if he didn't have a choice?" Originally, Chris didn't even want to let us try to write it. We started questioning and talked to some of the people at DC Comics and said, "Do you think there's ever a way that Superman would kill someone." At first they said, "No way. I just felt it was unsatisfying and so did Zack. Originally, Zod got sucked into the Phantom Zone along with the others. Killing Zod was a big thing and that was something that Chris Nolan originally said there's no way you can do this. We were feeling - and I think a lot of people were feeling - that Superman was ceasing to be relevant. If you don't reinvent these characters - and they are constantly being reinvented in the comic books - then they become stagnant and they cease being relevant. You have to respect the canon, but constantly question the canon. One of the lessons that Chris and I learned from Batman was that if you're going to revitalize an iconic figure like that, you have to be prepared to slay some sacred cows and you have to be prepared to weather the slings and arrows of some people.
